Although the mobile network has evolved a lot over the years, it still continues to be quite slow. Even in fast 4G networks, a page takes an average of 14 seconds to load, which is an eternity for today’s demanding users. One of the main reasons that make the mobile web slow is that even when a user visits a page optimized for mobile devices, the browser has to discover, download and process about 100 URLs before the web is displayed completely. This process is especially slow in the case of news portals and sports with live content and personalized announcements, according to the researchers’ explanation.
“Vroom drastically improves solutions like proxy servers, which come with security and privacy issues, and complements solutions like the Google Accelerated Mobile Pages project, which requires web pages to be rewritten,” said Harsha Madhyastha, one of the developers of this software. What Vroom does is to make changes at the architecture level, grouping the resources that mobile browsers need to load the pages completely. Thus, when the web server receives a request from a browser, in addition to returning the requested resource, at the same time it informs you about other dependent resources you need to obtain. This reduces the number of requests made by the browser, decreasing the waiting time to load the page. In the tests, the researchers tested Vroom to access more than 100 popular websites and could see that the program reduces the loading time by up to 50%. It is still in prototype phase but the first results have been really promising, since it does not require an improvement of the connection itself, but only of the architecture of the mobile web.
